Wireless?? Landline??
Times are changing...for the better, too. 100 years ago the
telephone was only a dream to most people around the world. Can you imagine what it was like when, city or country,
you finally were able to talk to someone without leaving your house? It was many years before telephone
service was available to most homes in the US. And, even now, there are places where telephone service is unavailable.
Cellular phones, on the other hand, have been around only about 20 years. Just think of the catching
up they had to do. First was the initial cost of technology...towers, phones, licenses. The cost was prohibitive
to all but the wealthy and the business world. The phones were definitely not portable and voice quality was poor.
How could this innovation ever pay for itself?
Now, just 20 years later, we have phones that fit into our pockets, take pictures, and browse for
less than the cost of our home phone. Data transmission speeds are going up and costs are coming down. The switch
from landline to wireless has begun. Technology is beginning to eliminate some of the signal problems, such as in-building
signal quality and data speed. Customer usage is increasing thereby reducing the costs for service. With
free long distance and 'family plans', it is now cheaper to use a cell phone than to pay for landline service. Especially
if you have a business line.
Where is this all leading us? Totally wireless, of course. Home phone, computer, condo, mobile,
all wireless and all productive. Right now we have a phone at home (maybe one in a condo) costing money but not being
used. We are also paying for the cell phone...why not combine them? Then you can move the home phone to the condo,
RV, yacht, etc. at no cost, no installation fee, and no charges for 'shut off' or 'start up'.
Is it going to be a life with handsets the size of your pocket? No...you can connect your cell phone
to the standard phone of your choice. Comfort, quality, and convenience...and still wireless.
